Worked examples
Here are a few practice questions from this topic. Try answering each before reading the explanation.
Example 1
Your overall stopping distance will be longer when riding
- A. at night
- B. in the fog
- C. with a passenger ✓ correct
- D. up a hill
Explanation: When carrying a passenger on a motorcycle the overall weight will be much more than when riding alone. This additional weight will make it harder for you to stop quickly in an emergency.
Example 2
Motorcyclists are only allowed to use high-intensity rear fog lights when
- A. a pillion passenger is being carried
- B. they ride a large touring machine
- C. visibility is 100 metres (328 feet) or less ✓ correct
- D. they are riding on the road for the first time
Explanation: If your motorcycle is fitted with high- intensity rear fog lights you must only use them when visibility is seriously reduced, that is, when you can see no further than 100 metres (328 feet). This rule also applies to all other motor vehicles using these lights.
Example 3
When going through flood water you should ride
- A. quickly in a high gear
- B. slowly in a high gear
- C. quickly in a low gear
- D. slowly in a low gear ✓ correct
Explanation: If you have to go through a flood, ride slowly in a low gear. Keep the engine running fast enough to keep water out of the exhaust. You may need to slip the clutch to do this.
Example 4
When riding in extremely cold conditions what can you do to keep warm?
- A. Stay close to the vehicles in front
- B. Wear suitable clothing ✓ correct
- C. Lie flat on the tank
- D. Put one hand on the exhaust pipe
Explanation: Motorcyclists are exposed to the elements and can become very cold when riding in wintry conditions. It’s important to keep warm or your concentration could be affected. The only way to stay warm is to wear suitable clothing. If you do find yourself getting cold then stop at a suitable place to warm up.
